21 March 2019

On 21 March, the EU-funded Initiative Mayors for Economic Growth signed a Cooperation Memorandum with the Public Administration Academy (PAA) in Chisinau, Moldova.
During the meeting between the M4EG Secretariat representatives and the PAA, the rector Oleg Balan made a presentation of the Academy facilities and resources, emphasising that besides offering a post-university degree in public administration and conducting professional training for civil servants, the institution provides methodological and expert support to the public authorities, including support to the administrative reform efforts.
Peter Korsby, the M4EG Secretariat Team Leader stated that the Initiative aims to contribute to the strengthening of local public authorities’ capacities in ensuring sustainable economic development of their municipalities. Strong local governments are an essential element of an efficient national public administration system, stressed Mr. Korsby. Taking into account that the M4EG Initiative has a limited implementation period, the M4EG Secretariat makes special efforts to ensure sustainability of the results. Therefore, cooperation with the Academy will be beneficial for both parties and ensure institutionalization and distribution of the gained knowledge and experience in the future.
In the regard, Mr. Balan mentioned that the Academy has high-quality scientific and methodological resources, as well as excellent academic staff, which can be put to good use by the M4EG country team and signatories. The signed memorandum aims to boost and intensify the Academy engagement and contribution in the M4EG implementation in Moldova, with more concrete mutual activities to be defined through a series of consultations and mutual information exchange.
At the closure of the visit a spontaneous Signing Ceremony took place, during which Peter Korsby handed over the M4EG Junior Member certificate to Victor Ambroci, deputy mayor of a newly joined Calarasi municipality, who was at the moment taking professional training classes at the Academy.
